Kumarakom is a tourist village in Kerala in India. It is a cluster of small islands on the Vembanad backwaters. The unique geographical terrain of the region dispersed with vast paddy fields, palm groves, mangrove forests, lagoons, canals and backwaters make Kumarakom quite distinct from any other place in Kerala.

We directly kept the GPS to Backwater Ripples, resort which given us mesmerizing view of Vembanad Lake. The Vembanad Lake, the blessing that has been given to the people of Kumarakam is indeed the sole reason for their water based lifestyle.Vembanad Lake, one of India’s longest and largest lakes, forms the backbone of Kerala’s renowned backwater tourism. Encompassing a vast network of canals, streams, wetlands and mangroves, the lake brings the surreal tropical beauty of Kerala.

Kumarakom is located in South Central Kerala at a distance of almost 13km from Kottayam town.Tourist season is at its peak between September and March.

Variety of mouthwatering fish preparations are available at Kumarakom. For the adventurous sort we recommend the toddy shops locally known as ‘kallu shappu’. These shacks serve spicy curries and delicacies of all sorts; try karimeen (pearl spotted fish), crab, prawn, beef or pork dishes along with toddy (a sweet fermented alcoholic beverage made from coconut palm) from any of these local shappu’s. We went to Kilikoodu Restaurant(also a toddy shapu), where we get authentic Kerala style variety food items.Do watch our YouTube video regarding Kilikoodu Restaurant from below link:-

The modern history of this exotic backwater village started with the arrival of the English farmer Alfred George Baker in 1847. He reclaimed 500 acres of Vembanad Lake and made garden land and paddy fields. He built the Baker House (also known as the History House). Mr.Baker was the beloved Kari Saipu (possibly an elision from Baker Sahib) of the locals. The Baker House itself was in ruins, until it was taken over by the Taj Group and restored into a luxury heritage hotel.

One of the famous Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary (also known as Vembanad Bird Sanctuary) is situated at Kumarakom in Kottayam district in the Indian state of Kerala, on the banks of Vembanad Lake. Set in the Kerala Backwaters the bird sanctuary is an ornithologist's paradise and a favourite haunt of migratory birds.

We didn't slept for that night since we can't takeaway our eyes out of beautiful lake view.

Had our breakfast from one of teashop(chayakada) on road side with minimum sitting availabilit and left Kumarakom.
