Kollam (a.k.a) Quilon, is situated in the southern corner of India in the state of Kerala. Kollam is encircled by Alleppey in the north, Pathanamthitta in the northeast, Thiruvananthapuram in the south, Tirunelveli (Tamilnadu) in the east, and the Arabian Sea in the west. 

It is believed that the name of the place, Kollam have been derived from the Sanskrit word "Kollam" meaning pepper. KOllam is considered as the entrance to the renowned backwaters of Kerala and over one third of its surface is covered by the great Ashtamudi Lake.  

Sourrounded with a long and beautiful coastline, Kollam has many scenic places to explore. Since it is located on the banks of Ashtamudi Lake, it is also one of the best places to go cruising in the backwaters. People also love visiting the Thenmala Ecotourism Centre, Palaruvi Waterfalls, Jatayupara etc.

Kollam is a sighting place for the one who is seeking forests, waterfalls, lagoons, backwaters and beaches. One can go and relax at the nearby beaches, namely Kollam, Thirumullavaram and Thangasseri.

Kollam is the place which takes the credit for being the hub of the country's cashew trading and processing industry. It is considered as one of the oldest ports on the South India and has long been drawing the attraction of international countries. It is historically remembered as one of the most important ports which were part of the legendary Spice Trade.

The eight hour boat trip between Kollam and Alappuzha is among the most sought-after and enchanting experience on the backwaters of Kerala. Kollam is home to some of the famous  temples built in traditional Kerala style.
