Sometimes, a mistake leads to the most unforgettable experiences. Although I had planned a relaxing 2-night, 3-day getaway in Sakleshpur, we ended up spending our days at a coffee estate in a small village near Mudigere, about an hour away from Sakleshpur. There were no shops nearby, and spotting people was a rare occurrence. Surrounded by lush greenery and complete silence, it felt like we had stepped into a different world.

How did this happen? While searching for a resort in a coffee estate around Sakleshpur, I came across Red Roof Resort. It had excellent reviews, a very high rating, and was budget-friendly. Impressed by all the positive feedback, I booked it without noticing that it was actually located quite far from Sakleshpur town. What initially seemed like a booking mistake turned into one of the most peaceful and memorable experiences of our trip.

We started early in the morning from Bengaluru, hoping to enjoy an authentic Karnataka breakfast at Sambrama Hotel Lakkenahalli, a place I had visited and loved on an earlier trip to Mangaluru. However, I soon realized it wasn't the best plan for a long weekend. The restaurant was packed with travelers, making it difficult to find a seat or even place an order. The staff were extremely busy, and despite their best efforts, it was hard to get their attention. What was supposed to be a quick breakfast turned into a time-consuming affair, delaying the start of our journey.

If you are planning to visit Mudigere by public transport, the most convenient option is the KSRTC bus from Majestic Bus Station in Bengaluru. The journey takes around 6–7 hours. There is no direct train to Mudigere. The nearest railway stations are Hassan and Chikkamagaluru, but taking a bus is the easiest way to reach Mudigere.

After crossing Hassan, we stopped for lunch at The Ossoor, located just outside Sakleshpur. The restaurant is beside a coffee estate, making the place peaceful and relaxing. There are a few outdoor seating areas where you can enjoy your meal while admiring the beautiful surroundings. Before continuing our journey, we bought some fresh coffee and spices from The Ossoor shop.

We then left the Bengaluru–Mangaluru highway and took the road towards Mudigere. The drive itself became an experience to remember. The road passed through endless coffee plantations in the Western Ghats. Passing through small villages and estates, we caught glimpses of the simple life of people whose livelihoods revolve around coffee cultivation.

At first, my family wasn't very happy with my choice of accommodation. Since the resort was far from Sakleshpur and located deep inside a coffee plantation, surrounded by forests. There were very few shops and only small villages on the way. They were worried about the location. But as we continued our journey, they slowly forgot their fears and started enjoying the scenic beauty all around.

By the time we reached the resort, they were all smiles. They even joked that the places I choose often seem disappointing at first, but somehow they always turn out to be unforgettable experiences in the end.

Once we reached the resort, we checked in and were surprised to find that it had only five rooms, and we were the only guests on our first day.

The resort had just one staff member who took care of all our needs throughout the three days. He was a very calm, polite, and helpful person. His wife was the cook at the resort. They prepared all our meals, breakfast, lunch, dinner, and evening snacks, with great care. Every meal was served on time, and the food was delicious, fresh, and hygienic.

Since there are no restaurants, tea stalls, or even small shops nearby, it is better to book a package that includes all meals if you plan to stay at the resort. The resort is simple and does not have many luxury amenities. It has a swimming pool and a small indoor games area with table tennis, carrom, and a few other games.

As soon as I entered our room, I opened the curtains and was amazed to see coffee plants just outside the window, almost within touching distance. The place was incredibly peaceful. It was so peaceful that we could hear the sounds of different birds, something we rarely experience in the noise of a busy city.

After dropping our luggage in the room, we set out for Devaramane, meaning "Home of God", a hidden gem in the Western Ghats.

In mythological movies, we often see the homes of gods surrounded by moving clouds. Devaramane gave us a similar feeling. From the parking area to the viewpoint of Devaramane Betta, clouds floated all around us. It felt as if we were walking through them.

To reach the viewpoint, you need to do a simple to moderate trek of about 15–20 minutes. The climb is worth every step. From the top, we enjoyed a breathtaking view of the Western Ghats, standing in the middle of the clouds.

There is also an ancient temple dedicated to Kala Bhairaveswara, making the place spiritually as well as naturally beautiful.

We returned to the resort, controlling our craving for a cup of tea, as we couldn't find any tea stalls or shops on the way.

After reaching the resort, we ordered tea with potato bajji and onion pakora. The snacks were freshly made, hot, and very tasty. We enjoyed our evening tea in the open dining area while chatting and sharing stories.

After an early dinner, we went to bed with happy hearts, looking forward to a peaceful and relaxing day at the resort the next morning. I always feel that the true beauty of a place is best experienced in the early morning. So, as usual, I was excited to wake up early and enjoy the fresh air, birdsong, and peaceful surroundings of the coffee estate.

When I woke up early in the morning, I couldn't see anything beyond our balcony because everything was covered in thick fog. But sometimes, what is hidden can be even more beautiful than what is visible. The coffee estate wrapped in mist, the cool breeze, and the peaceful silence made the morning feel truly beautiful.

The staff, his wife, and her helper served us breakfast at around 8 a.m. After breakfast, we all went to the swimming pool. Before we entered the pool, they cleaned the water for us.

My father, who is 72 years old, surprised us by showing different swimming strokes like the butterfly and backstroke. It had been almost 40 years since he had last swum. My son happily went to the children's pool and showed us how he could float on the water. He had learned swimming at school, and this was the first time he got a chance to show us what he had learned.

Everyone enjoyed the morning in their own way, making it a memorable and relaxing start to the day.

There are many trekking spots around Mudigere. Since we wanted a relaxing trip, we skipped trekking and drove along the Charmadi Ghat route to enjoy the lush green beauty of the Western Ghats.

There are several waterfalls along NH 75, including Charmadi Rock Waterfall. However, as it was summer, most of the waterfalls were dry. Even without the waterfalls, the drive was beautiful with its winding roads, green hills, and fresh mountain air. We stopped at the Charmadi Ghat viewpoint and enjoyed a refreshing matka soda on a hot summer afternoon.

Later, we drove to Mudigere town for lunch. Since it was during the gas crisis, only a few restaurants were open. After searching for a while, we found Genz Cafe. It was a clean and cozy café with a pleasant atmosphere. We ordered white sauce pasta, sandwiches, and cold coffee. Everything was delicious. We never expected to find a cafe serving such good food with a nice ambience in a small town like Mudigere.

After lunch, we returned to the resort and spent the rest of the day relaxing in the peaceful coffee estate. In the evening, we sat in the open courtyard of the resort under the full moon sky. The calm atmosphere, the cool breeze, and the silence of nature made it a truly memorable evening.

We were impressed not only by the beautiful surroundings but also by the warm hospitality of the staff, who made us feel at home throughout our stay.

The next morning, as we started our journey back to Bengaluru, my father said he would love to visit this resort again. That made me realize how a peaceful place and kind people can leave a lasting impression on our minds.

On our way back to Bengaluru, we stopped at Manjarabad Fort, a historic fort built by Tipu Sultan in 1792. The fort is famous for its unique star-shaped design. Since Tipu Sultan was allied with the French in his fight against the British, he sought the help of French engineers to build this European-style star fort.

It is easy to imagine that Tipu Sultan named it "Manjarabad" after the spectacular views from the fort. Since "Manzar" means "view" or "scene" in Persian, the name could be interpreted as "City of Scenic Views."

Inside the fort are underground chambers that were used to store gunpowder. These rooms remain surprisingly cool even during the summer. The fort also served as army barracks and an armoury during Tipu Sultan's reign.

A short climb from the entrance takes you to the top of the fort, where you can enjoy beautiful views of the Western Ghats and the surrounding countryside. The fort is well maintained, and walking through its old stone walls gives you a glimpse into its rich history.

It was the perfect final stop before ending our peaceful and memorable trip to Mudigere.

This trip was about slowing down, enjoying nature, meeting kind-hearted people, and spending quality time with family. What started as a "wrong" booking turned into one of our most peaceful and memorable holidays. Sometimes, the places we never planned to visit become the ones that stay in our hearts forever.
