Detailed Information

The Myth

According to the epic Ramayana, Dhanushkodi was the place where Lord Rama and his army built Ram Setu, to rescue his wife Sita from the clutches of Ravana, the king of Lanka. After rescuing his wife, Lord Rama destroyed the bridge with arrows from his bow, on request of Vibhishana, the new King of Lanka and the borther of Ravana, thus the name of the town became ‘Dhanushkodi’, meaning ‘End of Bow’. Ram Setu is also known as Adam’s Bridge. It is still submerged in the sea and is partly visible from Dhanushkodi. Adam’s Bridge connects Pamban Island of Tamil Nadu in India and Mannar Island of Sri Lanka.

Convergence of two water bodies

The point where the Bay of Bengal converge with the Indian Ocean is a gorgeous view. When the quiet green water of the Bay of Bengal meets the clear blue water of the Indian Ocean one will get a breathtaking experience. The convergence is so natural.

Gulf of Mannar

It is a large slightly deep bay forming part of the Laccadive Sea in the Indian Ocean.  It lies between the southeastern tip of India and the west coast of Sri Lanka , in the Coromandel Coast region. The chain of low islands and reefs known as Ramsethu, which includes Mannar Island, separates the Gulf of Mannar from Palk Bay, which lies between the Tamil Nadu state of India and the Mannar district of the Northern Province of the island nation of Sri Lanka.

Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park

The Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park is a protected area of India consisting of 21 small islands and adjacent coral reefs in the Gulf of Mannar in the Indian Ocean. The park has a high diversity of plants and animals. The park includes estuaries, mudflats, beaches and forests of the near shore environment. It also includes marine components such as coral reefs, seaweed communities, sea grasses, salt marshes, mangroves and seaweed photo gallery. Public access inside the Park is limited to glass bottom boat rides.

Ghost Town

In 1964 a devastating Cyclone hits the shores of Dhanushkodi and killed more than thousands people. After the Cyclone, which was regarded as one of the most powerful storms to ever strike India on record, the Government of Tamil Nadu declared Dhanushkodi as a Ghost Town which was unfit for living. Visitors can see the ruins of a temple, railway station, a church and homes of the then inhabitants there in the Ghost Town. Long time after the tragic incident the town became alive as a offbeat tourist destination and is still continuing as a popular destination because of its spectacular natural variations and splendid tourist spots.
