Agra is a famous city in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh in India. Sultan Sikandar of the Lodi dynasty founded the city of Agra in the early 16th century. It was the capital of the Delhi sultanate, and also served as the Mughal capital during some periods of the Mughal Empire. The city is on the banks of the river Yamuna, which has a lot of mythical value in the history of India.

Agra is best known for the Taj Mahal, a complex mausoleum designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1983. Taj Mahal is often considered to be the world’s best example of Mughal architecture. Due to the presence of the Taj Mahal and other historic monuments, Agra has a lucrative tourism industry. Tourism has a significant role in the economy of Agra, with millions of tourists visiting Agra and surrounding monuments every year.

Agra is 206 kilometers south of the national capital New Delhi and is 378 kilometers west of the state capital, Lucknow. Agra is one of the most populous cities in Uttar Pradesh. Agra is a major commercial and industrial center known for its leather goods, cut stone, and handwoven carpets. Many religious and cultural festivals are held in Agra. Janamashtami commemorates the birthday of Lord Krishna. The Taj Mahotsav, a 10-day art, crafts, and music festival, is held in Shilpagram, a crafts village close to the Taj Mahal. (usually in February).

A red fort made of  massive red sandstone walls - The Agra Fort, was built by the emperor Akbar in the 16th century. It contains the Pearl Mosque (Moti Masjid; 17th century), constructed of white marble, and a palace, the Jahangiri Mahal. The fort was also designated a World Heritage site in 1983. The Jāmiʿ Masjid, or Great Mosque, and the elegant tomb of Iʿtimād al-Dawlah (1628), of white marble, are located near the Taj Mahal. To the northwest, at Sikandra, is the tomb of Akbar.

The only major wildlife sanctuary near Agra is Keetham Lake, also known as Sur Sarovar Bird Sanctuary. The lake has nearly two dozen varieties of migratory and resident birds. The Sur Sarovar Bird Sanctuary has Bear Rescue Facility and is India's first sanctuary for 'dancing' bears.Asia's largest spa called Kaya Kalp – The Royal Spa is at the ITC Hotel Mughal in Agra.
