The Gokak Falls, popularly known as "the Niagara of India," is one of the country's prettiest waterfalls. Its water is derived from the Ghataprabha river,  It resides in a beautiful gorge of Gokak Valley.

Gokak Falls

Falls also hold historic significance because it was from here that electricity was first generated.

There are also monuments from the Chalukyan period on both sides of the gorge, which are accessible via a ropeway. Tourists can visit the generating station as well as monuments from the Chalukyan era. Lying at a distance of about 60 km from Belgaum, the falls are known for their beauty, speed and shape. June to September is the best time to visit here as the waterfalls are at their scenic best. The waterfall is horseshoe-shaped at the crest, with a flood breadth of 177 metres (580 ft). During the rainy season, the thick reddish-brown water sweeps far over the brink of the cliff with a dull roar that can be heard from some distance.

The town of Gokak is of historical importance. It was founded in 1853. The waterfall is of great importance. In 1887, during British rule, the Forbes Gokak Spinning Mill was set up near the falls. Over time, it was developed and functioned till date as a major source of economy for the city.
