Muniyara or Anakottapara Park is part of Marayoor village which is around 3-4 kms distance from Marayoor towards Kanthaloor. This is a beautiful spot that lies on the slopes of the Western Ghats in Idukki district. We can trek through the area of Muniyara to reach 15 different types of Dolmens, which belongs to the Neolithic Age, i.e. between 3000 BC and 14000 BC.
These dolmenoids were burial chambers made of four stones placed on edge and covered by a fifth stone called the cap stone. These above ground burial chambers are built with large stone slabs and are called 'megaliths'. The Muniyara Dolmens clearly show that the tribe living in this region before or during the Neolithic Age used to revere the dead.
It does not resemble a tourist spot , but a calm and quiet place surrounded by sugarcane plantation and Jaggery extraction units. Apart from the Dolmenoid cists in Muniyara, we can also see the natural sandalwood forests and pre-historic rock paintings in this area.
Travel Tips
- No parking space, have to use the road side for parking.
- Pure lemon grass oil will be available in the eco tourism shop here.
- Best time to visit this place is before 9AM or after 4PM. Avoid the noon time as it will be very hot.
- Sunset view will be good from this rock.
- Easily accessible as its on the road side towards Kanthaloor.
- Avoid this spot in the Jeep Safari and add some other off road spot.
