Vagamon, also spelt as Wagamon, situated at a height of 1,100 meters from the sea level in the border between Kottayam and Idukki districts in Kerala. The place has scenic views, activities and it is the best place to spend a weekend with family and friends. Vagamon is surrounded by meadows, beautiful tea estates, famous pine forests, landscapes and mountains with greenery hills. 

Vagamon generally has a cool climate with soothing wind and a slight chill during the winter and the temperature ranges between 10°C to 30°C during the summers. The nearest town from Vagamon is Elappara towards Idukki route(14 KM from Vagamon), but we can find lots of homestays, hotels and resorts in Vagamon.

Vagamon is surrounded by three famous hills – Thangal Para that has the resting place of a Sufi saint, Muruganmala dedicated to Lord Muruga and Kurisumala, a popular Christian place of pilgrimage, thus representing the religion of Hinduism, Islam and Christianity, the three main religions people in Kerala follow.

Detailed Information

This hidden gem of Kerala tourism, Vagamon was discovered by the British around 1930, when they saw the potential in its rich landscape which suits tea plantation and many popular tea plantation companies started setting up their own plantations here, and that’s how it became popular as a town of tea-estates. The best time to visit Vagamon is between the months of June to August after the monsoon. 

Vagamon has a mix of green hills, chill breeze, blue sky covered with mist, ghat roads, green tea plantations, pilgrim spots, waterfalls etc. This place is famous for its spectacular sunrises and sunsets.

Vagamon Pine Forest

This is one of the major attractions and is around 4 kms away from the Vagamon town. This pine forest here is entirely man made was planted during the British time. The pine trees here stand tall at 50 to 150 feet height and is one of the most loved spots by the photographers and filmmakers. 

Thangal Para
This is a religious pilgrim spot for the Muslims where a big rock can be found, and its believed as the resting place of Husrath Sheikh Fariduddin Baba a Sufi saint who is believed to have reached Kerala from Afganistan about 800 years ago. Though its a pilgrim spot, the place provides an excellent view and its a great hiking destination for tourists. 

Paragliding
Vagamon provides a unique breathtaking gliding experience of flying like a bird over green valleys and meadows, lakes and dams, and misty hills. This is an exciting activity av avilable in Vagamon and people who likes thirilling experiences will never miss this. This paragliding activity here will takes around half an hour and they charge around INR 3500 for it.

Marmala Waterfall
Marmala is a waterfalls located along the Erattupetta route. This is one of the places to visit in Vagamon. The crystal clear waters here makes it a favourite spot for tourists. 

Kurisumala
This is another pilgrim spot in Vagamon, where Syro Malankara Catholic church of the Cistercian monastery lies. It will take around one hour trekking to reach this  beatiful hill top and this location is suited for both devotees and non-devotees.

Barren Hills
The Barren hills of Kolahalamedu is one of the most stunning hills in Vagamon. This place provides a unique experience of different sceneries throughout the year based on the season. This place will be dark green during the monsoon season, and the it turns into golden meadow during the summer season.
